4th Eastern Conference on Football Economics / 6th Western Conference on Football and Finance

Higher School of Economics, New Economic School, and University of Reading are organising International Scientific Conference on Football and Finance to be held at HSE University – Saint Petersburg in 2020, July 1-3. The announced submission deadline is February 1.

4th Eastern Conference on Football Economics / 6th Western Conference on Football and Finance

Sport research conferences have become a tradition at HSE University. Sport research section has long been gathering interested scholars as a part of the April International Academic conference, and Conference on Football Economics has been held jointly with NES since 2017.

In 2020, organisers joined forces with colleagues who traditionally held the conference in Western Europe (particularly, Bern Frick), thus now the conference gets a double name of 4th Eastern Conference on Football Economics / 6th Western Conference on Football and Finance. Since 2020, the conference venue will alternate between Eastern and Western Europe. HSE in St. Petersburg will host the conference during the Euro-2020 quarter-finals, and the University of Reading will host the conference in 2021.

Stefan Szymanski, as the co-author of bestseller ‘Soccernomics’ and one of the most cited sports economists, is going to be the key speaker in the forthcoming conference in St. Petersburg. Helmut Dietl (University of Zurich), David Forrest (University of Liverpool), and Robert Simmons (University of Lancaster) will present their research during a plenary session.

The conference will cover a variety of topics on the economics and finance in football industry: the Financial Fair Play consequences, success factors in football, football league regulations, tournament design, football analytics, football betting, scheduling tournaments, competitive balance, etc.

Applications for participation should be submitted by conference website by February 1, 2020. If accepted, full paper must be submitted no later than May 1, 2020. Discussants will be assigned to each paper. Student papers are very welcome to be presented in a separate student research section. We are waiting for your applications!
