Title: "Dynamic analysis of team formation in association soccer "
Abstract:Soccer is a highly dynamic strategic game, and the teams can choose a formation and playing manner (conservative or aggressive) depending on the match venue, state of the game, opponent’s actions and other factors at each moment. In our research, we are aimed at searching for the best response team formation by analyzing the changes in expected goals difference. We use data from La Liga, FA Women’s Super League, 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. After the regression analysis, we find that some formations significantly improve team performance measured as the expected goals difference. We also investigate the effects of team formation in different game settings. Our results would help team managers and coaches decide on the strategy applied in different game settings.
