Project Laboratory for Development of Intellectual Competitions in Economics

Project Laboratory for Development of Intellectual Competitions in Economics (Faculty of Economic Sciences, HSE University) is a new type of subdivision that is part of the Office for the Development of Intellectual Competitions.

The main goal: project work on methodological, organizational, and informational support of the Economics contests held by the HSE University; development of new types of intellectual competitions in Economics.

DICE Project Laboratory mainly focuses on the development of the International Economics Olympiad.

The project laboratory also does the following:

  • consolidates methodological support for the Economics competitions held by HSE University;
  • coordinates the work of the Problem Committees and Jury in Economics and Economics-related contests;
  • facilitates the interactions between faculty teachers and teachers of other structural units of the HSE University (including regional branches) with the aim of working on tasks for intellectual competitions;
  • attracts students from the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Faculty of World Economy and World Politics, ICEF, and other structural divisions of the HSE University to participate in the work with the aim of improving their project and research competencies and expert work skills;
  • creates presentations for participation in seminars and conferences, methodological materials, reports;
  • organizes of seminars with the participation of both laboratory staff and invited experts;
  • cooperates with partner higher education institutions and other interested organizations to promote the existing competitions organized with the contribution of the laboratory staff; creates and supervises the community of olympiads participants.

The roundtable "Teaching Economics to High School Students: Curricula, Practices, Competitions" took place as part of the XXII April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. Danil Fedorovykh, Deputy Vice Rector of HSE University and the President of the Executive Board of the International Economics Olympiad (IEO), initiated the session. Alexander Zhitkovskiy, Head of the Project Laboratory for Development of Intellectual Competitions in Economics (Faculty of Economic Sciences, HSE University), was the co-moderator.

The IEOx Winter Challenge, a two-week international online competition for junior and senior high school students, organized at the initiative of the International Olympiad in Economics, recently came to a close. Students solved a business case and economic tasks in addition to participating in a financial literacy game on a special online simulator.

The annual awards ceremony of the Student Research Paper Competition (NIRS) was held on February 8, Russian Science Day. This year, 165 people received awards, including not only HSE students but also contestants from Saint Petersburg State University, Moscow State University, Far Eastern Federal University, Mount Holyoke College (USA), and other universities. Another 160 participants became laureates of the competition, with 1,924 papers submitted in total.

For the second year in a row, a team representing Brazil won the team-level gold medal of the International Economics Olympiad. Silver was taken by Indonesia’s team, while Russia’s team took bronze. In the assessment of individual participants, Russian participants won three gold medals and two bronze medals.

This year’s International Economics Olympiad for high school students started on September 7 with an opening ceremony that celebrated the biggest and most diverse group of students yet to compete in the Olympiad, now in its third year. 29 teams from 29 countries will compete this time. The event, which is being held online due to the pandemic, will last until September 13.

On July 31, the II International Economics Olympiad (IEO) for high school students came to a close in Saint Petersburg. In the team competition, the Brazilian team won the gold medal, while teams from China won silver and bronze. One of Russian teams placed fifth.

On July 24, the second annual International Economics Olympiad (IEO) for high school students kicked off at HSE University in St. Petersburg. The competition is organized by HSE University with the support of Sberbank. Students from 24 countries will compete over the course of a week. The winners will be able to enroll in any HSE Economics programme in 2020 with a full tuition scholarship.
