Speaker:  C. Swader (Department of Sociology, LCSR, NRU-HSE)
Topic: " Violent States, Violent Cultures, and/or Violent People?A comparative multi-level research design "
This presentation puts forward a developing research project. Ultimately, I am interested in comparing the justifiability of interpersonal violence across countries. By 'interpersonal', I mainly refer to the propensity of individuals to use violence against “others” in their own society, one of the items in the World Values Survey 2012, measured across a great range of countries. My central explanatory interest involves how the employment and justifiability of violence also at the levels of the state and culture impact the justifiability of violence interpersonally.

Integrated theories and research that link interpersonal violence (such as violent crime or assault) to violence by the state (war or police violence) are rare. Criminologists focusing on individual-level 'stranger' or domestic violence tend to ignore the violent state. Political scientists dealing heavily with state aggression tend to ignore violence at the level of individuals. Norbert Elias (in a somewhat Hobbessian manner) proposed an inverse relationship between interpersonal violence and the state's monopolization and employment of violence. However, I suggest the opposite within 'cultures of violence', and one of my central mechanisms involves the collective memory of just war (e.g. “heroism,” “sacrifice”), which functions to give violence a utility in the service of 'righteousness', which can spillover to the individual level. In this project, we have operationalized 'just war' as the proportion of war-related holidays in a society (we use every possible society in the World Values Survey). In addition, cultural violence indicators such as gun ownership and the popularity of martial arts may be significant. Finally, I propose the important roles of (a) perceived environmental threats, (b) individual agency (mastery and domination), and (c) gendered violence, in the forms of machismo, soldier-worship, and violence in the home. I plan to use a multi-level (logistic) regression model to predict individual violence propensity across countries.
