Topic: "Skilled-biased technological changes, redistribution and growth"

Abstract: It is widely believed that skilled-biased technological change is the main reason for the gradual rise in income inequality in developed countries during last 30 years. In Master thesis we investigate the effect of skilled-biased technological change on the income gap between skilled and unskilled workers and on their preferences for redistribution. A simple politico-economic growth model with exogenous technological progress and endogenous rate of taxation is used and it is verified by the U.S. data for 1994-2012 years. According to the model, the rate of redistribution should increase, but in fact it did not.

Topic: "Cultural transmission and the stability of equilibria in a producer-pirate model"

Abstract: We study the evolution of social norms in the economy with weak institutions and rent seeking. As a benchmark model we use the static producer-predator model of Mehlum et al (2003) and we embodied it into the dynamic model with cultural traits. In our model young agents could acquire one from two types of social norms, to be ethical or pragmatic. For an ethical agent the predator's activity is forbidden, whereas a pragmatist choses the more profitable activity. We find the equilibria in the model and show how temporary deterioration of economic institutions influences on the evolution of social norms and economic outcome. We also analyse the effect of two kinds of policies which are intended to escape a predator trap, the first one is to provide changes in formal institutions and the second one is to promote ethical social norms through education.
