Russia—The results of the Russian National Contest for the Best Student Paper on Statistics was announced recently. A total of 40 papers were submitted from various Russian regions for the contest, which was organised by the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) to celebrate the International Year of Statistics. The contest allowed participants to cover essential topics in statistics: macroeconomic statistics; business statistics; financial statistics; mathematical methods in statistics, and social statistics. On May 13, the contest assessment panel, consisting of HSE professors and alumni, named Anna Markova, a year-two master student at the HSE Department of Statistics and Data Analysis, the contest winner. Markova authored a paper titled “Time Series Modeling with Heavy Tails for the Analysis of Financial Data”. She received the first-place prize, a MacBook Air provided by the contest sponsor, the HSE International Institute of Statistical Education (MISO). An honorable mention award was presented to Arseny Babenko, a year-two student at the Faculty of Economics, Kuban State University. His paper will be published in the Statistical Studies Journal.
