Alumni Employment

Since Faculty of Economic Sciences students complete multiple internships during their course of study, many following graduation immediately secure full time jobs with the Russian government, banks, and multinational or transnational companies. Amid the vast majority of students coming with strong mathematical backgrounds more than half of graduates choose to continue with graduate studies at HSE, while those who are interested in study abroad or pursue immediate career in academia, receive offers of admission to top-ranked PhD and master’s programmes in US and Europe.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences closely monitors alumni employment. Our graduates are traditionally employed primarily in the financial sector (banks, investment and audit firms) - more than a third of graduates work there. Then come consulting companies, strategic development departments. They employ about 12-15% of graduates annually. About the same number of graduates work in research and policy analysis, or continue academic careers at graduate programs. High-tech companies (IT, telecommunications) hire about 10-11% of graduates annually. About 10% of graduates work in marketing and advertising, and 8% work in the real sector.

Vast majority of graduates find employment in large companies, with many of which they contacted during their studies - in courses taught by employees of these companies, at job fairs, in internships and part time and summer jobs.

Every year banks and financial sector companies are among the key employers: Russian banks - Central Bank, VTB24, Alfa Bank, City Bank, VEB, Russian Agricultural Bank, HSBC, Deutschebank, Merrill Lynch, Raiffeisenbank, investment and financial companies - Alpha -capital, Uralsib, Finam, including world giants - such as the Rothschild Group, as well as insurance companies - Ingosstrakh, Renaissance Insurance. Graduates successfully find jobs in the real sector, in such corporations as Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola, Rosatom, Lucoil, Sibur, Russian coal, Renault, Russian Railways.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences provides comprehensive assistance to students interested in research and career in academia. Each year, about 15 of the top students enter highly ranked Western master and PhD programs. Also, in 2017, for the first time in the history of the HSE University, Anna Sokolova, a PhD holder of HSE University (and the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Bachelor's and Master's programs alumna), was hired as an assistant professor at a US based research university
