Seminar "Bank Operations During the Revolution and the Civil War"
Ilya Voskoboinikov (HSE University, Expert Institute, Center for Productivity Research, Department of Applied Economics) presented the paper "Bank Operations During the Revolution and the Civil War. Materials of the Chita branch of the Moscow People's Bank, 1916–1922" on June 28, 2024.
Abstract:
The paper presents archival materials on the daily operations of Chita branch of the Moscow People's Bank (MPB) from the moment of its establishment in Chita in 1916 until its closure in 1922. The branch worked in unique conditions - during the years of World War I, the interregnum, Komuch, Kolchak and Semyonov, as well as during the first year of the existence of the Bolshevik-controlled buffer state - the Far Eastern Republic. The paper examines the number and composition of the branch's employees; relationships with the central board of the MPB in Moscow, Omsk, Vladivostok and Harbin; the impact of the revolution on the relationships between the branch's employees and management; the reasons for the closure of the branch in the Far Eastern Republic in the context of a special "buffer" economy, which is also little studied today.
