Economics PhD

HSE is Russia’s leading university in economics, management, social sciences, and computer science. Founded in 1992, the university is young, however, it is already a highly respected research centre. In 2009, the Russian Ministry of Education granted HSE “National Research University” status, a distinction conferred only to the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions. HSE is an excellent place for young researchers and scholars. HSE present a vast array of opportunities for students in doctoral programs.

The Doctoral School of Economics is a part of the Faculty of Economic Sciences.

The Economics PhD programme is designed to prepare professionals in economic research and education of the highest academic calibre in Russia, as well as the global academia. The Economics PhD Program fields of research offered are Economic Theory, Mathematical, Statistical and Instrumental Methods in Economics, Regional and Sectoral Economy, Finance, and International Economics.

Prior to application

To be considered for the doctoral school, the applicant needs to:

• Choose your research field from the available

• Prepare a brief research proposal for your PhD project

Please organise your proposal under the following headings: Title Research question; Objectives; Literature reviews; Research techniques; References & Bibliography.

• Contact the potential supervisors from the respective fields and get the review of your proposal

• If your project approved by your potential supervisor, send the approved version of the proposal and the proof of the review to the academic director of the Doctoral School of Economics via email. 

Entry requirements

• Master's degree in a relevant discipline.

• English/Russian proficiency:

All applicants whose primary language is not English or Russian (or for whom English or Russian is not one of their primary languages) are required to submit proof of satisfactory English/Russian proficiency. Accepted certificates: TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, CPE, TORFL.

Exemptions: Applicants who completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an institution where the primary language of instruction was English or Russian.

• Successful completion of entrance exams:

  • Foreign language examination

  • Special discipline examination

• Two letters of recommendation, one of them is from the former applicant’s educational institution

Fees and Scholarships

International students can enrol in either in

• state-sponsored places carried out in accordance with international treaties and intergovernmental agreements of the Russian Federation (Federal Quota scheme with full-tution scholarship)

• fee-paying scheme
