Seminar "L.D. Trotsky on the Economics of Building Socialism"
Andrey Belykh (INS RANEPA) presented a paper "L.D. Trotsky on the Economics of Building Socialism" on February 21, 2024.
Abstract:
L.D. Trotsky (1879-1940) is traditionally considered more as a political figure, and his economic concepts remain in the shadows. Meanwhile, the economic views of L.D. Trotsky and their evolution largely explain the events that took place in the USSR.
Trotsky always adhered to the classical Marxist thesis that the system that ensures higher organization of production and labor productivity wins. He was not against building socialism in one country, he considered it impossible to build it in a separate country that does not use the achievements of Western countries. A revolution in developed countries is needed so that the USSR does not lose the economic competition with the West. Until it is not there, it is necessary to fight to increase the efficiency of the Soviet economy - improve planning, preserve the market and party democracy. The Thermidor that took place in the USSR closed the possibilities for such development. "Intervention of cheap goods from the West" was more dangerous than a military attack.
