If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere

- says Nile Miller, UT alumnus answering the questions about his year spent in Moscow at the Faculty of Economic Scienses

This line from Frank Sinatra’s song about New York City is probably the best summary of how my self-perception changed after my time in Moscow. I gained confidence in my ability to work and live with people from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, all while learning the ropes of life in one of the world’s largest cities. As I juggled tutoring, translation work, editing and writing consultations in two different HSE locations across Moscow, I gained valuable experience managing many different projects simultaneously, which will no doubt be transferable to all of my future professional and academic endeavors.

Before Moscow, I had never seriously considered pursuing a degree outside of my home country, but now, I’m slated to spend two entire years in the Baltics working toward a Master’s degree.

I also made many valuable connections in Moscow.

What is your most unforgettable memory of that time?

Even with all of my different engagements, I still had ample time to travel. During my second semester in Moscow I traveled through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and I also visited the Russian cities of St. Petersburg and Kazan. Each of these trips was unforgettable in its own way.

 A fun fact?

At HSE Dorm #4, located near Studencheskaya metro station, I shared my living space with students from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Ghana, Hungary, Mexico, Germany, Austria, India, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Spain, France, Italy, Finland, Indonesia, China, Japan, Morocco, Iran, Brazil, South Korea, Turkey, Greece, and, of course, Russia – and these are just the countries I’m able to name off the top of my head.
