Economics and Economic Policy Master Program at HSE

Starting September 2021, master programs Applied Economics and Economics: Research Programme will merge to become tracks of the newly established program Economics and Economic Policy. Research track will be taught entirely in English, while in two other tracks - Economic Policy and Applied Economics, instruction will be available in English and Russian.

The purpose of the Economics and Economic Policy programme is to prepare students for the future work in academia, government agencies, private companies, and centers for economics analysis. Graduates of the Applied Economics and Economic Policy tracks are trained to forecast and analyze the consequences of decisions in the  fields of public policy or company policy. Research track provides thorough knowledge of economic theory and methods to carry out advanced theoretical and empirical research and prepares students for the future academic career.

The main driver of this merger is to utilize in full pledge new development of the HSE University master program educational standard, which HSE University is going to implement in coming years. In brief the idea of the new standard is to provide students a more individualised trajectory of education and research, built around the key seminar.

Courses and faculty will sustain, as well as the calendar structure of the program. The program will inherit current European partners for the dual degrees - Pantheon-Sorbonne University, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, University of Luxembourg and Lancaster University, UK. Up to 15 students of the research track will be provided by the extended research scholarship support and priority hiring as RA and TA, as well as research fellows to various research labs at HSE University.

Sergey E.Pekarski

Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences

Amid high interest from international applicants to both programs we expect a lot of synergies from this merger. We plan to keep the variety of course offering and attract highly motivated students with enhanced opportunities for study and research that three tracks will provide.

The current first year students of both programs will graduate from their current programs in summer 2022, after which the programs cease to exist as separate master programs and become tracks in Economic and Economic Policy two year master program.
