Абстракт диссертации Владимира:
The Linguistic and Agricultural Origins of Gender Norms
This research investigates the effect of grammatical gender marking on gender inequality and gender-discriminatory attitudes. The analysis reveals that the relation between grammatical gender intensity and female participation in political and economiс activities is negative for the whole world. However, when I restrict the data to European countries only, I find that there is no correlation between grammatical gender marking and gender inequality, which is contrary to the previous findings. Along with that, I explore another possible cause for the emergence of gender biases, namely, the transition towards agriculture which is believed to have been conducive to a gender-based division of labor. I construct a measure of agricultural ancestry based on a distribution of sustainable genetic markers – Y-DNA haplogroups – associated with the spread of agriculture in Europe during the Neolithic. The haplogroups are likely to be a proxy for this transition and the modern population’s ancestors’ way of life. I find that regions, where agricultural ancestry is more common than that of hunter-gatherers, have higher levels of gender inequality. Residents of these regions are also more likely to report gender-discriminatory attitudes towards women and women living there are less likely to be employed. The effect of ancestry (or haplogroups) is robust and highly significant for a variety of gender inequality measures on both country and individual levels in contrast to the effect of grammatical gender marking.
