Graduate Admissions Webinars at the Faculty of Economic Sciences

Graduate Admissions Webinars at the Faculty of Economic Sciences

Graduate admission webinar was opened by Mrs. Oxana P. Budjko, Head of the International Office at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, who started by welcoming and greeting all online participants. Elizaveta Masenkova was introduced, her primary task is to coordinate the graduate student admission process.

Two programs academic supervisors,  Dr. Olga Kuznetsova, the academic supervisor of the Economics and Economic Policy Program, and Dr. Julia Ovanesova, the academic supervisor of the Strategic Corporate Finance program continued with the introduction of their programs, accordingly. Both Dr. Kuznetsova and Dr. Ovanesova are also alumni of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Both programs do not require any knowledge of the Russian language because they can be taught entirely in English. However, those offered admission with full scholarship are entitled to study Russian during the prep year for free, if they wish so.

Economics and Economic Policy Master Program

Olga Kuznetsova

The main structure of the program: the program has two paths. The first is more general and applied, while the second is a research trajectory. We also have three tracks. So each trajectory has two tracks, and I'll briefly describe them, so you can understand what kinds of future research or applied studies you can perform with us.

General trajectory is two tracks: Applied economics and Quantitative methods in finance and economics. The second track, Quantitative Method, requires some understanding of the Russian language because one of the primary seminars is given in Russian. However, you may only pick your own study plan in English for this track, Quantitative Methods in Applied Economics. Russian language is not required to study in Applied Economics track.

In applied economics, there are many specific courses and events devoted to various applied studies, such as what the effects of any action for a corporation or a governmental agency would be, but the quantitative methods are basically about the correct usage of econometric methods and mathematical methods to analyze some economic cases and events.

The research trajectory is taught in English, thus no Russian is required. You can study in English in Research trajectory. This path is usually taken by individuals who want to pursue an academic career, although there is no obligation to apply to PhD upon completion.

So, if you take this path and then finish your studies and decide not to pursue an academic career, you'll have a lot of options ahead of you, such as moving to international financial organizations or huge enterprises, this program is also a competitive advantage to work there.

If you are interested in behavioral economics, for instance, the way people react to different incentives and the way their choices impact the results of various interactions between economic actors, the Behavioral Economics track is for you, since it focuses on behavioral economic issues. Every track has scientific supervisorsa.k.a. mentors, and I am also one of them in the research track.

Strategic Corporate Finance Master Program

Yulia Ovanesova

I've been with HSE University since 2012.  I'm eager to share my expertise and experience with you. This program is geared for young and mature individuals interested in corporate finance as well as those seeking a wide education in finance through a learning community of international students.

This program has three tracks: two research tracks for students who want to enhance their abilities and academics here and two general tracks for individuals who wish to pursue a career in business. You may select one of them based on what piques your interest the most.

The first track is Behavioral finance and asset pricing (research). The asset pricing track focuses on finance research and is intended for students interested in academic and scientific careers in areas such as financial markets and instruments, asset pricing models, investment strategies, alternative investment, and so on. You will learn about not only the pricing of exchange assets but also about items like bitcoin.

The Fund raising, capital structure and payout policy is a general track. This track is designed for students who are interested in all elements of corporate finance, including financing, investment type, payout policy, cost of capital, and other financial concerns. This track will be useful for students who are building a career in corporations, private equity, venture capital, and investment banks.

And last but not least is the Investment decisions, Mergers, Acquisitions and Restructuring track. This track will be useful for students who have built a career in corporate consulting firms and investment banks. As a result, it's a more practical track.

Admission Portfolio

The application process for international students started on November 1. No application fee is charged. Graduate programs assess applicants based on their academic credentials, provided by the applicant. Admission portfolio slightly varies for different programs, as well as the assessment scores for different parts of portfolio may vary.

Portfolio requirements for the Economics and Economic Policy Program

Portfolio: You provide both your diploma and a transcript of your grades, submit a motivation letter. Your curriculum vitae and a letter of recommendation from either your academic or technical adviser are required. It will tell us how you can improve your studies with us from your prior institution or, more likely, a lecturer or anywhere from your past studies, and you can also add something that has demonstrated your academic achievement. Just a few remarks regarding this portfolio: I believe the most significant portion is the second one here. So the motivation letter is crucial, and I understand that many of you don't know what path to choose. You must demonstrate that you have some ideas about your preferred path and how it relates to your career prospects. You can tell us about your skills and what you wish to accomplish when you get the opportunity to study with us.

According to my experience, letters that demonstrate knowledge of the program's structure obtain higher scores. Academic guidance of this program outlining how to write a motivation letter can be found on the program’s website. I strongly advise you to have a look. You can also submit proof of your previous studies' achievements in the form of certificates. Include any published papers or publications.

Portfolio requirements for the Strategic Corporate Finance

You will need a motivation letter, a CV, and a degree certificate. English proficiency is a required component of our portfolio. You will be required to provide an English certificate.  The final stage is the interview. They will ask you on your knowledge of financial and probability theory, as well as your research interests.

Mrs. Budjko added that international applicants' portfolios are reviewed on a rolling basis during two weeks. After two weeks there will be a decision, or an invitation to an interview. Anyone interested to be considered for funding should apply as early as possible.

Study Experience

Study Experience

I'm a second-year master's student studying economics and economic policy.  I will share my experience with the program. I'm a second-year master's student studying economics and economic policy.

To begin, I am from Ghana, and I am aware that some Ghanaians are considering applying. I strongly advise you to apply to the program. I'd like to explain a little bit about the course structure. One good thing about HSE is that aside from the traditional micro, macro, econometrics, and the rest, you also get the opportunity to study Python and R for data analysis, which is something I am very thankful for. Especially for individuals who wish to work in this area. I also appreciate the fact that you can choose your own path, so even if you choose the research route, you can specialize in the courses that interest you. We have specialists known as mentors that will guide you through each phase.

Furthermore, the faculty here are very welcoming to students and are always ready to help. Also, at HSE, we are not only trained to be researchers, but also to be presenters because we are always offered the opportunity to do presentations. The university is also structured in such a way that you truly learn and comprehend what you are studying rather than simply going through the courses, which is extremely important to notice. Here, the grading is on a 10-point scale, unlike in my formal school which used a 100-point scale.
