François Guillemin – Seeking Adventure while Engaging in Serious Research

In deciding to join HSE as a post-doc fellow in the Center for Institutional Studies), François Guillemin sought to combine a sense of adventure with a post-doctoral experience that would allow him to continue his research in the field of banking regulation. HSE ended up on the top of his list, and he accepted an offer to start this September.

The fourth HSE International Summer University has drawn to a close. The programme continues to grow and evolve. This year over 160 students from 46 universities came to HSE to take courses in International Relations & Politics, Computer Science, Russian Studies, Economics, Culture & History.

'I’ve Liked HSE and Moscow a Lot'

Carlos Cortez, a bronze medallist of the International Mathematical Olympiad (2011, 2012, 2013) and a Mathematics graduate of MIT, recently completed a two-month research internship at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics under the supervision of Professor Sergei Lando. He will soon be pursuing a Master’s degree at University Paris-Sud in France followed by a PhD at Northwestern University (USA).  The research internship was made possible through a cooperation agreement between MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and HSE.

Linda Moessler is a German student who spent her spring semester studying international relations at HSE Moscow. Despite political tensions and cultural differences, Linda managed to fit in greatly and enjoy her stay in Russia. Miss Moessler agreed to tell us about her experience as a foreign student at HSE. Her tale will surely be of great interest for those curious about how international students live in Russia.

‘Nowhere Have I Enjoyed Teaching More Than in Russia’

On July 24, the results of the Best Teachers 2017 competition at HSE were announced, with more than 500 teachers from across the university being recognized by students, 80% of whom voted in this year’s competition. While the financial reward for recognition is certainly attractive, the teachers who won appreciated the support of students, as well as the opportunity to reflect on their careers and what has made them successful.

'Moscow Seems Like a Totally Different World but I Feel Very Comfortable Here'

On July 21, students from Seoul National University presented their projects devoted to politics, economics and social sphere of Russia. Every year, within the framework of HSE Summer University, a group of South Korean students comes to Moscow to learn the Russian language and take 'Understanding Modern Russia' course. At the end of the course students prepare presentations based on the knowledge they have gained and their own research results.

River Cruises – See Moscow from New Perspective

Moscow river cruises are quite popular among the capital’s residents and visitors. River navigation in Moscow opens in mid-April and runs until late October. Winter cruises on icebreakers are also available for when the river is frozen over.

Austin L. Wright from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago flew to Moscow from Chicago to discuss  ‘Civilian Abuse and Wartime Informing’ at the Political Economics workshop that was held at HSE on July, 20, 2017.

HSE Joins Top 50 in QS Rankings of Young Universities

The Higher School of Economics (HSE) has taken 48th place in the QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking. Furthermore, it is the sole Russian academic institution in this ranking.

HSE Among Top Five Universities with Highest Paid Graduates

The Higher School of Economics was ranked fifth among Russian universities with the highest paid graduates during their first year of employment, according to data from an employment monitoring study by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. On average, graduates who completed a full-time undergraduate programme at HSE make 51,700 rubles per month, which is up from previous years and nearly double the average for the country as a whole.
