A team from HSE has made it to the Regional Finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge 2015/2016, recently held in Chicago. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.

HSE took first place among Russian universities in subject rankings for Sociology and Economics & Econometrics (101-150 globally). In Business & Management Studies, HSE ranked first and is currently the only Russian university in the ranking, placing in the 151-200 group.

Henry Penikas, Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Economics, has been chosen to become a member of PRMIA Steering Committee.
HSE lecturers and research fellows who plan to teach open optional courses and/or elective (MAGOLEGO) courses during the 2016/2017 academic year can submit applications until February 15.
Like any major academic institution, the Higher School of Economics offers teaching in both traditional educational programmes and various shorter formats. The Summer University which began two years ago and gives students from other universities the chance to attend additional courses during the summer vacation, falls into the second category. It provides opportunities to study with particular professors and helps students decide how to pursue their academic interests in the future.
The Russian Science Citation Index project has been officially launched. The best Russian academic journals are now compiled in a separate database on the Web of Science platform. The goal of the project is to integrate Russian academic journals into international networks for scientific information exchange. 649 journals have been included in the RSCI list based on bibliometric indicators and expert assessments.
Over the next 20 years, death rates among working age Russian men are expected to drop by a third due to a change in alcohol consumption preferences – namely, the decreasing popularity of vodka, according to Yevgeny Yakovlev, Assistant Professor at the HSE Department of Applied Economics, and Lorenz Kueng, Assistant Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
This year several students from University of Texas at Austin came to HSE’s Faculty of Economic Sciences for study abroad experience and to do internships as teaching assistants at HSE and as consultants at the Merrill Lynch Writing and Communication Center at the New Economic School. HSE and NES jointly run a bachelor’s programme in Economics. American students share their impressions of Moscow and working at HSE.
Katherine Alberti came to work as an intern at HSE’s Faculty of Economic Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. During the May holidays, Kat’s Russian friend invited her to come along on an adventurous journey. Kat had taken a medieval Russian literature class so she was prepared for Russian peculiarities. Visiting Veliky Novgorod gave Kat an opportunity to feel the foundations of Russian culture. Kat has shared her experience of exploring the city with Read Square, HSE online student magazine. She recommends going to Novgorod to discover how Russians of old used to live.
