Martin Carnoy, Professor at the Stanford University (USA) and Academic Supervisor of the HSE International Laboratory for Educational Policy Research, told us about some of the tasks and plans for the Laboratory.
John Nye, Professor at George Mason University (USA), who has recently become the Academic Supervisor of the HSE’s International Laboratory for Institutional Analysis of Economic Reforms, told us about his view of the laboratory’s activity.
On November 25th and 26th the first meeting of the HSE International Expert Council on the priority area of development Economics took place at the HSE. Vladimir Avtonomov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Economics, Franz Hubert, Professor at the Humboldt University Berlin, Andrey Yakovlev, Vice Rector of the HSE, and Richard Jackman, Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, told us about the results of the meeting.
On October 4th a special session of the Political Economy
research seminar took place at the HSE Faculty of Economics. Yang Yao, Deputy
Dean of the National School of Development and Professor at the Center for
Economic Research, Beijing University, spoke about ‘Equality, the Disinterested
Government, and Economic Growth: The Case of China’.
Vladimir Avtonomov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Economics, told us about the new standards for the Faculty and its undergraduate curricula.
From July 10th – 25th the joint Russian-Swiss Summer School took place in Moscow and Lucerne. 13 students from the HSE and 22 students from the University of Lucerne participated in it.

to June 1st a joint Russian-Chinese conference on ‘Transition and
Economic Development in China
and Russia:
Past and Future' took place at the HSE. The event was organized by the Faculty
of Economics. On the Chinese side, leading economists from two large
universities, Wuhan and Hong
Kong, took part in the conference. Vladimir Avtonomov, Dean of the
HSE Faculty of Economics, told us about the event and cooperation with the colleagues
from China.
On May 24th – 26th
the Samuel P.
Huntington Memorial Symposium on Culture, Cultural Change and
Economic Development took place at the HSE. It was organized by the
Cultural
Change Institute (the Fletcher School, Tufts University, USA) and the
Higher
School of Economics. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with the
Symposium participants.
On April 15th a round-table discussion entitled ‘Does Culture
Matter for Development?' took place at the Higher School of Economics.
Chandran Kukathas, Professor at the London School of Economics, opened

On April 8th the National Award on Applied Economics Ceremony took place at the HSE. The event was organized as part of the 11th International Conference on the Problems of Economic and Social Development. You can watch a video of the ceremony here.
